The purpose of this post is to illustrate the cloud-based Microsoft collaboration and productivity tools that exist, along with a mapping to Content, Audience, and Use Case. Please keep in mind that the applicability of tools depends on the environment and situation; so there is no way to create a list that shows this information as an absolute truth for every person and organization. In addition, this is only a working draft, incomplete at best; but at least it is a beginning.<br />

Business analysis is a vital function for technology projects and sometimes I view it as an art as much as a science because there are a lot of dynamic (and sometimes creative) aspects to doing it well. Sometimes we can operate informally, without documentation to track and verify requirements. Other times, descriptive documents, matrix documents, diagrams, and other tools are needed. Sometimes we have set expectations of content and format of business analysis inputs and outputs, while, other times we can discover and develop as we go. <br />
<br />
Business analysis and requirements definition tend to require more formalized approach when some of the following circumstances are true:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The business has formal obligations to another party</li>
<li>Performance requires contextual business knowledge</li>
<li>Participation includes a high number stakeholders/team members/resources, third-party participants, or virtual teams</li>
<li>Project environment is complex</li>
<li>Solution is complex</li>
<li>Project has many moving parts</li>
<li>Low risk tolerance</li>
<li>Tight budget</li>
</ul>
<br />
When developing requirements, understanding the business needs very well up front is essential for ensuring capabilities being delivered are scoped and prioritized properly. I find it helpful to take a business process centered approach to requirements. This ensures that we will be solving the correct problems for the business because our focus is on the inputs and outputs of the process, not focused on intermediary challenges that exist with the current state that may be irrelevant in the future state. Secondly, it helps us to minimize many of the communication challenges related to requirements definition. Using documentation to capture the business process details helps ensure that the team understands the requirements the same way. Consistently referring to the requirements as either "Business Requirements" (non-functional, needs and wants) vs. "Solution Requirements" (functional) helps baseline communication and makes it easier to determine if something relates to "current state" vs. "future state" (see also <span style="color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><a href="http://njbblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/general-business-requirements-vs.html" target="_blank">General Business Requirements vs. Solution Requirements</a></span>).<br />
<br />
I'd like to share a tool I use, that I refer to as the Business Process Analysis Template. I initially developed this tool in Excel in 2005 for an enterprise wide CRM initiative and since that time the tool has undergone many iterations. Lately, I've been using Word. When I begin a new software development or systems implementation project, I do discovery and gather requirements using the template. I fill in one Word document per business process/stakeholder. In other words, I may have several Word documents for a single process because I am seeking independent feedback from each stakeholder.<br />
<br />
Once completed, I gather the documents and consolidate the information to one Word document per process, marking up the source and qualifying some of the feedback collected. I store the collection of these business process documents in a SharePoint site and refer to these as I begin design activities. These write-ups become extremely helpful when writing the Solution Requirements (e.g. User Roles/Personas, User Stories, etc.) and when prioritizing deliverable for each development sprint.<br />
<br />
<b>Business Process Analysis Template:</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4hnbdJeb2-wTwX-10ClH7xOd3uWiKAZBphdnkHRFaBzJEPfcCAil9TPL0PTI5PQn9ybiQKiLCA-BWTKi-dXNy-bTXVAAiykZUy07K7I3QelMpuEGKamLRE7eanFvPW772TDxE/s1600/BusinessProcessAnalysisTemplate.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4hnbdJeb2-wTwX-10ClH7xOd3uWiKAZBphdnkHRFaBzJEPfcCAil9TPL0PTI5PQn9ybiQKiLCA-BWTKi-dXNy-bTXVAAiykZUy07K7I3QelMpuEGKamLRE7eanFvPW772TDxE/s640/BusinessProcessAnalysisTemplate.png" width="536" /></a></div>
<br />
The Business Process Analysis Template has worked well for software development solutions as well as large, enterprise system implementation projects such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Enterprise Search and Discovery. Of course, the tool can be adapted and used for many other purposes.<br />

<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Description</span></b><br />
<br />
The post describes how to use Diagnostic Logging to help troubleshoot issues with SharePoint 2013.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Solution</span></b><br />
<br />
<br />
<b>1) Get the Path of the Trace Log</b><br />
<br />
a) Open a remote desktop session to a server that has SharePoint installed (e.g. Web Front End server).<br />
<br />
b) Start, Programs, SharePoint, right-click SharePoint Central Administration, and click Run as Administrator. If prompted for a confirmation about running SharePoint Configuration Wizard, click Yes. This will launch SharePoint Central Administration in Internet Explorer.<br />
<br />
c) From Central Administration, navigate to Monitoring, Reporting, and Configure Diagnostic Logging. The Path is located in the Trace Log section of the page. Open this path in Windows Explorer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCWk8v8rPAH5f_Nt1QqJsS3XIdemlIsazIruEpasSn5xBQWD9vOLF_nkT7GsDE7Q3PpOPy3INRHI8jkiGYAnk0nopPkO99Bsv3vjpEBZypfX2-MjPUgstLMp2rtLOQGNNdWoV6/s1600/SP2013LogProcedure002.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="337" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCWk8v8rPAH5f_Nt1QqJsS3XIdemlIsazIruEpasSn5xBQWD9vOLF_nkT7GsDE7Q3PpOPy3INRHI8jkiGYAnk0nopPkO99Bsv3vjpEBZypfX2-MjPUgstLMp2rtLOQGNNdWoV6/s640/SP2013LogProcedure002.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<b>2) Increase the diagnostic logging level</b><br />
<br />
From the Configure Diagnostic Logging page (Central Administration, navigate to Monitoring, Reporting, and Configure Diagnostic Logging), check the box for All Categories and then set the logging level for "Least critical event to report to the trace log" to Verbose. Then click OK.<br />
<br />
Note: It is better to choose only the categories that are applicable to the problem you are troubleshooting.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8XqtK1JllY8pk78OZ_Hx725tlGyA4MlY1tjQRjQRJ2I-JFwh1lwqeCY0mQ0NVWvnpxS6xMeSCsmPlvdQMW3zO9uk5UqD9KzS8_dKAuxB8XhR7UdQtI_CjmXACjjH57BPcI5pS/s1600/SP2013LogProcedure001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8XqtK1JllY8pk78OZ_Hx725tlGyA4MlY1tjQRjQRJ2I-JFwh1lwqeCY0mQ0NVWvnpxS6xMeSCsmPlvdQMW3zO9uk5UqD9KzS8_dKAuxB8XhR7UdQtI_CjmXACjjH57BPcI5pS/s640/SP2013LogProcedure001.png" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<b>3) End the current log file and generate a new log file</b><br />
<br />
a) Start, Programs, SharePoint, right-click SharePoint Management Shell, and click Run as Administrator.<br />
<br />
b) Type New-SPLogFile and press Enter. This ends the current log file and starts a new log file.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib2rvfTAm7j77wIpR7FxY6srV8zlFJTqctSacfCRexMiMseNWmhIX3wqb5qhi70d1XP0OSRGdTpik-DjWGtP1xXhGGG2ru93WVLlzz2aMJMU7Tg7WmzOObTp_Bu20U-Ap6d0I4/s1600/SP2013LogProcedure006.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="84" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib2rvfTAm7j77wIpR7FxY6srV8zlFJTqctSacfCRexMiMseNWmhIX3wqb5qhi70d1XP0OSRGdTpik-DjWGtP1xXhGGG2ru93WVLlzz2aMJMU7Tg7WmzOObTp_Bu20U-Ap6d0I4/s640/SP2013LogProcedure006.png" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
c) Open the Trace Log Path in Windows Explorer to confirm that a new log file has been created.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVCFrrrUsQfaspQnUIspKgRy7-24xeZJkyG3k0LLAjYHOzVdj89mjvqNMrRSGFQiolaKV_KgXDNhRRTcGYEh4B7cywC_G64_Yr1PvtklC8VpZp9ecgnFGOqRHkmgLuwOZgVRzh/s1600/SP2013LogProcedure003.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVCFrrrUsQfaspQnUIspKgRy7-24xeZJkyG3k0LLAjYHOzVdj89mjvqNMrRSGFQiolaKV_KgXDNhRRTcGYEh4B7cywC_G64_Yr1PvtklC8VpZp9ecgnFGOqRHkmgLuwOZgVRzh/s640/SP2013LogProcedure003.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>4) Recreate the Problem</b><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Perform the steps required to recreate the problem that you were originally troubleshooting.</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>5) End the current log file and generate a new log file</b><br />
<br />
In the SharePoint Management Shell, type New-SPLogFile and press Enter. Using Windows Explorer you can confirm that you now have a log file for a short period of time when you captured the error.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnQEzNlR9u3vPwXE7-stRqttTTvwNHISF0CYfhQmtbor7NJlcmIfQyRsIypsWKZFo_kuR_ioPUI9rZeDMnb5mw4cGSyB_IYGTyc3bOm3PWvpQmvus4y0AV9uI10y_UNv11Ad_Z/s1600/SP2013LogProcedure004.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnQEzNlR9u3vPwXE7-stRqttTTvwNHISF0CYfhQmtbor7NJlcmIfQyRsIypsWKZFo_kuR_ioPUI9rZeDMnb5mw4cGSyB_IYGTyc3bOm3PWvpQmvus4y0AV9uI10y_UNv11Ad_Z/s640/SP2013LogProcedure004.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>6) Reset the diagnostic logging level</b><br />
<br />
From the Configure Diagnostic Logging page (Central Administration, navigate to Monitoring, Reporting, and Configure Diagnostic Logging), check the box for All Categories and then set the logging level for "Least critical event to report to the trace log" to Reset to default. Then click OK.<br />

<b>Session Title:</b><br />
<a href="http://lanyrd.com/2015/spsnyc/sdmzyr/" target="_blank">BI and Automation Tools for IT featuring SharePoint and SQL Server</a><br />
<br />
<b>Abstract:</b><br />
IT
organizations are responsible for delivering and maintaining technology
solutions and capabilities throughout organizations; sometimes at the
expense of their own productivity. Resource constraints deter IT
organizations from investing the time and attention necessary for
process improvement, resulting in a reactive approach to problem
solving. Now is the time to empower IT using reports, dashboards, and
notifications.<br />
<br />
This presentation demonstrates how to
utilize SharePoint Server, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and
SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to create business intelligence and
automation tools for IT. This session covers high-level concepts as
well as practical, hands-on instructions, tips, and tricks.<br />

<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Description</span></b><br />
<br />
This is a walk through of the process I took to solve a problem that I encountered in a SharePoint 2013 on-premises farm.<br />
<br />
When attempting to create a new Web application, I received an error that said.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD8MaDj591rK8lQl183AndpRVnvN78c22aIltYr5EChU3DZLoikh1X74R1bdDUPAuT4DuHRk-C3GbdPbW4GyPX7P2O2RGDrsIlL6iubx79Gp4Slhs3iTUlqX6cuSJVwhPdrAYa/s1600/PageCantBeDisplayed.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD8MaDj591rK8lQl183AndpRVnvN78c22aIltYr5EChU3DZLoikh1X74R1bdDUPAuT4DuHRk-C3GbdPbW4GyPX7P2O2RGDrsIlL6iubx79Gp4Slhs3iTUlqX6cuSJVwhPdrAYa/s1600/PageCantBeDisplayed.png" height="258" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
While the Web application appeared in Central Administration and the Content Database existed in SQL Server and was visible in Central Administration Manage Content Databases, I could not create a new Site Collection in the the new Web Application. I attempted to create another Web Application and received the same dialog message, "This page can't be displayed".<br />
<br />
After investing the farm health, I found that the Servers in Farm page in Central Administration was showing "Upgrade Required".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh93rZltBMFOsz_ON68Z1EAgp1Lgz_iGWZAsITw20qlRgICDX1XKGypYR8pHqnSQdA-WF_HSTDXjbxXifXmSShv2pRxtVQYrsizVzsiEsYAgH1I4X4enotQJrUSgIuXCInHS8XU/s1600/SP2013CentralAdminUpgradeRequired.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh93rZltBMFOsz_ON68Z1EAgp1Lgz_iGWZAsITw20qlRgICDX1XKGypYR8pHqnSQdA-WF_HSTDXjbxXifXmSShv2pRxtVQYrsizVzsiEsYAgH1I4X4enotQJrUSgIuXCInHS8XU/s1600/SP2013CentralAdminUpgradeRequired.png" height="522" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the Upgrade Status in Central Administration appeared to be OK with all "Succeeded" messages and no errors.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiObRSSObUxV5ZKwywogHJ1tRDRVuhdmSWe9z-FNO4iB59K23zotSnEWfq7BU8gzzAxR84wDm4uqUlugt7rW03zCPZNfmW_RgJdH0m0rd6A6x8bepa36Ucxq64wNco5mCA1wR0H/s1600/CAUpgradeStatus.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiObRSSObUxV5ZKwywogHJ1tRDRVuhdmSWe9z-FNO4iB59K23zotSnEWfq7BU8gzzAxR84wDm4uqUlugt7rW03zCPZNfmW_RgJdH0m0rd6A6x8bepa36Ucxq64wNco5mCA1wR0H/s1600/CAUpgradeStatus.png" height="556" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I opened a Command Prompt and ran stsadm.exe -o localupgradestatus. This took a few minutes to run but once the command completed revealed that there were 2 objects that "still need upgrade". These two objects were the two Web applications I attempted to create earlier.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq74aMrQKZpXLSl4cO3YTl28swKT4fmZXK_TCHOVVw2aKGls1dwtaGXiKSzE95CD9bK81FiU51CnzdDREUYPYJxEbqHguIQ7jut4HALOSzEH7eTSLCfFym4ZVZ5hbegDZ93Swu/s1600/STSADMOLocalUpgradeStatus2Errors.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq74aMrQKZpXLSl4cO3YTl28swKT4fmZXK_TCHOVVw2aKGls1dwtaGXiKSzE95CD9bK81FiU51CnzdDREUYPYJxEbqHguIQ7jut4HALOSzEH7eTSLCfFym4ZVZ5hbegDZ93Swu/s1600/STSADMOLocalUpgradeStatus2Errors.png" height="579" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Internet Information Services (IIS) showed Web Sites and Application Pools for each Web application. However, I discovered that the C:\InetPub\WWWRoot\WSS\VirtualDirectories\WebApplication directories for the problem Web Applications were missing files. It appears that the directories were only partially created.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Solution</b></span><br />
<br />
<br />
1. Open Windows PowerShell for SharePoint 2013<br />
<br />
2. Put contentservice value into variable<br />
$contentservice = [Microsoft.sharepoint.Administration.spwebservice]::contentservice<br />
<br />
3. Put contentservice of Web App into variable<br />
$webapp = $contentservice.webapplications | where { $_.name -match "WebAppName" }<br />
<br />
4. Provision the WebApp <br />
$webapp.provision()<br />
<br />
5. Verify the folder structure of C:\InetPub\WWWRoot\WSS\VirtualDirectories\WebApplication directories. It should look like the image below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg25nU4v0LEEdR-OOg5a7bwaWi1-dVf0H_fa32KJdySOeoFLMs5cMF0S2_tBK6zCec6Mvqd2iXCl07QtYeulSp2edtnbHo3AA69OQnhi_he21SH8klI6nArazoam3JGFhDwyPZf/s1600/CINETPUBWWWROOTVD.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg25nU4v0LEEdR-OOg5a7bwaWi1-dVf0H_fa32KJdySOeoFLMs5cMF0S2_tBK6zCec6Mvqd2iXCl07QtYeulSp2edtnbHo3AA69OQnhi_he21SH8klI6nArazoam3JGFhDwyPZf/s1600/CINETPUBWWWROOTVD.png" height="640" width="638" /></a></div>
6. Verify that stsadm.exe -o localupgradestatus shows zero (0) objects still need to be upgraded. <br />
<br />
7. Create a new site collection in the Web application and browse to it as a test that the Web Application is fully functioning.<br />
<br />
8. On the Web Front End server that is showing "Upgrade Required"; open the Command Prompt as an Administrator, change the directory to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\BIN", and run the following command:<br />
PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -wait<br />
<br />
9. Verify Central Administration Upgrade Servers in Farm shows Status of "No Action Required".<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>Abstract:</b><br />
First, we’ll review the architecture of SharePoint with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and define the role that the Business Intelligence capabilities play in an organization’s Enterprise Architecture (EA). From there, we will evaluate sample business scenarios and compare and contrast different possible solution approaches. We will design a reporting solution, and then build the solution step by step using SharePoint, SSRS, and SSIS. Finally, we will reflect on the overall approach that we followed and discuss further ideas and possibilities. This session covers high-level concepts as well as practical, hands-on instructions, tips, and tricks.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Description</b></span><br />
<br />
After configuring the State Service Application, Central Administration, Monitoring, Health Analyzer, Review Problems and Solutions shows an error; "A State Service Application has no database defined" even though a database does exist.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJnUP-08Vt7-UVuQlvcPDk6YW5TKklkW4taxSzYHyyGF2KVyV0i-Xrwx7A_d072_T1003_JfouTUOyXRCfBs2Z3UmPRfV4MSn86Fsp8zJSYmKyKXcCwOcc2R3xjE2d8HCmMot/s1600/StateServiceDBIssue.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJnUP-08Vt7-UVuQlvcPDk6YW5TKklkW4taxSzYHyyGF2KVyV0i-Xrwx7A_d072_T1003_JfouTUOyXRCfBs2Z3UmPRfV4MSn86Fsp8zJSYmKyKXcCwOcc2R3xjE2d8HCmMot/s1600/StateServiceDBIssue.png" height="288" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b style="font-size: x-large;">Solution</b><br />
<br />
I've seen this problem occur when the the State Service Application was configured while logged into the server with an account different from the Farm Account.<br />
<br />
1. Log into the SharePoint Server using the Farm Account.<br />
2. In Central Administration, Application Management, Service Applications, Manage Service Applications, delete the State Service Application Proxy.<br />
3. Delete the State Service Application.<br />
4. Use PowerShell to find the Identity of the State Service Database you would like to remove; Get-SPStateServiceDatabase (Microsoft TechNet, 2012).<br />
5. Using PowerShell, remove the State Service Application Database; Remove-SPStateServiceDatabase -Identity 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000, replace the zeros with the ID of the State Service Database retrieved from the prior cmdlet.<br />
6. Using PowerShell, <a href="http://njbblog.blogspot.com/2012/11/sharepoint-2013-how-to-configure-state.html" target="_blank">create a new State Service Application</a>.<br />

<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Description</span></b><br />
<br />
This post explains how to configure conditional formatting in an SSRS report, for an example that has three conditions.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Solution</span></b><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span></span></span><br />
<br />
In order to achieve the desired result, we can modify the Background Color property in the SSRS report with a formula, using the Switch function. As described in an MSDN article, "The Switch function returns the value associated with the first expression in a series that evaluates to true" (MSDN, 2012). In the example below we are setting the Variance field Red if the value is less than -100,000, Yellow if the value is between -100,000 and 0, and Green if the value is greater than or equal to 0.<span style="font-size: small;"></span><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Description</span></b><br />
<br />
This post describes how to configure the SharePoint Server 2013 Visio Graphics Service Application using PowerShell.<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Solution</span></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>1) Document the Naming Convention</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Determine a naming convention for each of the Visio Graphics
Service Application components. Document the naming convention.<br />
<br />
<b>Example:</b><br />
<span lang=""><span lang="">Application Pool Service Account: Domain\SvcAccount (this should already be created)</span> </span><br />
<span lang="">Application Pool: SvcApp_SPServiceApplicationPool_02 (this should already be created)<br />
Service Application: SvcApp_SPVisioServiceApplication_01<span lang=""> </span></span><br />

<br />
This session covers high-level concepts as well as practical, hands-on instructions, tips, and tricks. <br />

<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Description</span></b><br />
<br />
After installing a SharePoint Server or Project Server Service Pack or Cumulative Update, the Configuration Wizard shows that the Patch is missing from servers in the farm. In this case, the Configuration Wizard on Server 1 is showing that the Project Server 2013 SP1 Patch is missing, yet it was already installed.<br />
<br />
Error: Some farm products and patches were not detected on this or other servers. If products or patches are missing locally, you must quit this program and install the required products and patches on this server before restarting this wizard. If products or patches are missing on other servers, you must install the required products and patches on the specific servers, and you may then click the Refresh button to perform the status check again.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimyYdrHZiq5O1YmS3q-SHy3YG1VWu7b57oYVa6IQnaRnfo75L1jeubaiBdsvb6X40UR1RyLwa7QzqoyQkx-OzqmKES-RNk7M6tqi2S7l2wT2pAvsCX_JleMCTs06QeMMkeFnnn/s1600/FarmPatchStatus.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimyYdrHZiq5O1YmS3q-SHy3YG1VWu7b57oYVa6IQnaRnfo75L1jeubaiBdsvb6X40UR1RyLwa7QzqoyQkx-OzqmKES-RNk7M6tqi2S7l2wT2pAvsCX_JleMCTs06QeMMkeFnnn/s1600/FarmPatchStatus.png" height="550" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Attempting to run the Project Server 2013 SP1 Patch installation again from the .exe verifies that the Patch is already installed on the system. Herein lies the problem. On one hand, the Configuration Wizard will not
run because it thinks the patch is missing. On the other hand, it is
not possible to install the patch because it is already installed on
local server. Patch installed, patch missing, patch installed, patch
missing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX__myfvQB0TBRy4HKKJ5KDLI3LzlS31yK84UBgetdQSwkN3CD8sbj8w-5bCF0uXloucf5g6xXQXUiVv-t94wr_06Rp18ztm6UgiHZoBm66pnn5VbV4EKqm0pexcMF0nOLJnwW/s1600/UpdateAlreadyInstalled.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX__myfvQB0TBRy4HKKJ5KDLI3LzlS31yK84UBgetdQSwkN3CD8sbj8w-5bCF0uXloucf5g6xXQXUiVv-t94wr_06Rp18ztm6UgiHZoBm66pnn5VbV4EKqm0pexcMF0nOLJnwW/s1600/UpdateAlreadyInstalled.png" height="240" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Solution</span></b><br />
<br />
The solution to this problem is to run a PowerShell cmdlet on each of the servers that the Configuration Wizard is reporting, patch missing.<br />
<br />
1. Log into the SharePoint Server<br />
<br />
2. Open the SharePoint Management Shell as Administrator<br />
<br />
3. Get-SPProduct -local<br />
<br />
This cmdlet retrieves a list of the SharePoint-related products installed in the farm. It also retrieves the version information for updates installed. Using the -Local switch retrieves information for local server only. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWf3YpbPweX_lgg8LHMlofBsU5E2KufNCWaXbvuUhNbnaLOIiW_JBNABSQZiQ2zc0zVFw9m9YKyHRHpdixrpXhnn2jaloYai7j7vTB9j84M9wtK6dhwrD5hPGpr_Vd80zEJ7rB/s1600/CmdLine.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWf3YpbPweX_lgg8LHMlofBsU5E2KufNCWaXbvuUhNbnaLOIiW_JBNABSQZiQ2zc0zVFw9m9YKyHRHpdixrpXhnn2jaloYai7j7vTB9j84M9wtK6dhwrD5hPGpr_Vd80zEJ7rB/s1600/CmdLine.png" height="322" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf3koafqWoWJ1i77wV0_xpeA8OSh4ZT8rNp-5N4L9-JXit9zVVDTH5n6kNX0DepWIllIbWF6a0sa7pZsohGAdU7D7UnMJQgaEJDsr58q1xKoel_ld944V7E0Xq3_t0Mu09WFjm/s1600/CmdLine.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
It may take some time for the cmdlet to run, but once it completes on the servers, you can do a refresh on the Configuration Wizard and the Configuration will recognize that the patches are, in fact, installed on the servers and it will advance automatically to the next screen. You can continue run the Configuration Wizard upgrade procedure.<br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Description</b></span><br />
<br />
The Process Model, Shutdown Time Limit setting determines how long a worker process is allowed to stay alive. The default value is 90 second, however, if a process does not finish in time, it will be shutdown. In a sluggish environment that does not have adequate RAM, then it is common to see issues when interacting with Central Administration.<br />
<br />
For example, when creating a Web Application using Central Administration, the process may only partially complete before it is shutdown, leaving a Web Application in Central Administration, a content database in SQL Server, a Virtual Directory folder in the file system, but no corresponding Web site in IIS. In this case, you have to delete the Web Application from Central Administration and recreate it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Solution</span></b><br />
<br />
If possible, meet the minimum hardware requirements for RAM (Microsoft TechNet, 2014).<br />
<br />
Additionally, it is possible to increase the value of the Shutdown Time Limit to allow Central Administration more time to process the types of changes that are prone to timeout in an environment that is resource-challenged.<br />
<br />
To make this configuration change, open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager and then expand the server node and click on Application Pools.<br />
<br />

<br />
The default Shutdown Time Limit (seconds) is 90.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Troubleshooting Steps</b></span><br />
<br />
In Services.msc and in Central Administration, verified the <b>Search Host Controller Service</b> is "Started" on all SharePoint servers in the Topology.<br />
<br />
Restarted the <b>Search Host Controller Service</b><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Solution</b></span><br />
<br />
The <b>Search Host Controller Service</b> was running under the identity of an Application Pool Account, which did not have the required permissions to establish the connection.<br />
<br />
In Central Administration, Security, Configure Service Accounts, changed the Service Account assigned to the <b>Search Host Controller Service</b>, to the SharePoint Farm Account. Ran the activation again, and it was successful.<br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Description</b></span><br />
<br />
This post describes how to configure the SharePoint Server 2013 Search Service Application using PowerShell. <br />
<br />
In this example, there is one Database Server (SERVER01), one Web Server (SERVER03), and one Application Server (SERVER04).<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Solution</b></span><br />
<br />
This solution is for a small farm environment that has one Database Server, one Web Server, and one Application Server. The steps below will result in a complete Search Topology. <br />
<br />
The steps provided do not represent an automated script that you would copy and paste into a window and run all at once. Instead, the steps are intended to be run manually, one at a time, in the PowerShell window. The post is written this way on purpose and provides a way to step through each cmdlet one at a time.<br />
<br />
If you have a different server topology or if you would prefer a fully automated script to provision the Search Service Application, then I recommend that you look at the <b>References</b> section and possibly utilize one of the more sophisticated examples that exist in the community knowledge base. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Before Starting...</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Ensure that the Service Account to be used for the Service Application Pool exists and has been registered in Central Administration as a Managed Account<br />
<br />
Ensure that the Host Controller Service in Central Administration is registered under a Service Account that has adequate permissions to activate the Search Topology (e.g. Farm Account)<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>1. Prepare the PowerShell Session</b><br />
<b> </b><br />
Open the PowerShell window as Administrator.<br />
<br />
Clear-Host <br />
<br />
Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted<br />
Respond Y to confirm<br />
<br />
Get-PSSnapin -name Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -EA SilentlyContinue<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>2. Determine Naming Convention and Set Initial Variables</b><br />

<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Description</span></b><br />
<br />
Logged into a SharePoint 2007 Site Collection as a Site Collection Administrator with Full Control permission level, the Site Actions, Site Collection Settings menu is not present. The reason for this is that the Site Collection has a lock on it and is in a "Read-Only" state. In a case observed, this lock occured because a disk partition lacked adequate free space to complete a backup when new Site Collection backup process began.<br />
<br />
Once the disk space and backup issues are corrected, an STSADM.exe command can be run from the Command Line that will put the Site Collection in a "Not Locked" state. This will make the Site Collection Settings menu appear.<br />
<br />
As explained below, the desired state is "Not Locked" but problem state is "Read-only":<br />
<ul>
<li>Read-only - Blocks additions, updates, and deletions to the site collection.</li>
<li>Not Locked - Sets the site collection to an unlock status. This is the default setting.</li>
</ul>
(TechNet, 2008)<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Solution</span></b><br />
<br />
1) Open the CMD line (Start, Run, CMD)<br />
<br />
2) Change Directory to Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Bin directory<br />
<br />
3) Run this command to unlock the Site Collection:<br />
<b>stsadm -o setsitelock -url http://hostname.domainname.com -lock none</b><br />
<br />
4) Run this command to verify the Site Collection is Not Locked (None):<br />
<b>stsadm -o getsitelock -url http://hostname.domainname.com</b><br />
<br />
(Aquino, 2009)<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Key Words</b></span><br />
Site Settings missing, Site Collection Settings menu missing, Site Collection lock, Backup ran out of space. <br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Description</b></span><br />
<br />
This post describes how to configure the SharePoint Server 2013 Machine Translation Service Application using PowerShell.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Solution</span></b><br />
<br />
<b>1) Document the Naming Convention</b><br />
Determine a naming convention for each of the Service Application components. Document the naming convention.<br />
<br />
Application Pool: SvcApp_SPServiceApplicationPool_01<br />
Application Pool Service Account: Domain\SvcAccount<br />
Application: SvcApp_SPPerformancePointServiceApplication_01<br />
<br />
<b>2) Prepare the Application Pool / Service Account</b><br />
Example: Subscription Settings Application Pool: SvcApp_SPServiceApplicationPool_01 Application Pool Service Account: Domain\SvcAccount<br />
<br />
<b>A) If you are using an existing application pool:</b><br />
You do not need to create a Service Account nor an Application Pool. Note the names of each.<br />
<br />
<b>Verify Application Pool.</b><br />
Get-SPServiceApplicationPool | Select Name<br />
<br />
<b>Get the existing Application Pool.</b><br />
$SvcAppPool = Get-SPServiceApplicationPool "SvcApp_SPServiceApplicationPool_01"<br />
<br />
<b>B) If you are creating a new application pool:</b><br />
Determine which service account you will use to run the application pool that will be assigned to the. If you need to, create and register a service account to run the Subscription Settings Service Application.<br />
<br />
<b>Create the Service Application Pool and register it to the Service Account.</b><br />
$SvcAppPool = New-SPServiceApplicationPool -Name "SvcApp_SPServiceApplicationPool_01"$AppPool = New-SPServiceApplicationPool -Account (Get-SPManagedAccount Domain\SvcAccount)<br />
<br />
<b>Verify Application Pool.</b><br />
Get-SPServiceApplicationPool | Select Name<br />
<br />
<b>Get the existing Application Pool.</b><br />
$SvcAppPool = Get-SPServiceApplicationPool "SvcApp_SPServiceApplicationPool_01"<br />
<br />
<b>3) Open the SharePoint 2013 Management Shell as Administrator.</b><br />
<br />
<b>4) Create the Service Application and assign it to the Application Pool.</b><br />
$SvcApp = New-SPTranslationServiceApplication –ApplicationPool $SvcAppPool -Name "<b>SvcApp_SPTranslationServiceApplication_01</b>" -DatabaseName "<b>SvcApp_SPTranslationServiceApplication_01_DB_01</b>" -DatabaseServer "<b>SQL Alias Name</b>"<br />
<br />
<b>Verify Service Application.</b><br />
Get-SPServiceApplication | Select Name<br />
<br />
<b>5) Create the Service Application Proxy and assign it to the Service Application.</b><br />
$SvcAppProxy = <b>New-SPTranslationServiceApplicationProxy</b> -Name "<b>SvcApp_SPTranslationServiceApplication_01_Proxy_01</b>" -ServiceApplication $SvcApp<br />
<br />
<b>Verify Service Application Proxy</b><br />
Get-SPServiceApplicationProxy | Select Name<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Notes</b></span><br />
This Service Application does have a database associated with it.<br />
<br />
These steps will result in a redundant Proxy for the Service Application. One can be deleted.<br />
